EDITORS COMMENTS
The Last Farewell: The Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert in Portsmouth Dockyard (1904) This poignant photograph captures the final moments of the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert as it was being broken up in Portsmouth Dockyard. Three years prior, the vessel had proudly served as a symbol of British royalty and naval power, as seen in the top photograph. The yacht's last duty was to transport the remains of Queen Victoria from Osborne House on the Isle of Wight to the mainland in 1901, following her death at the age of 81. Built in 1899, the Victoria and Albert was the largest and most luxurious royal yacht in the world at the time, measuring 325 feet in length and capable of carrying a crew of over 200. Its grandeur reflected the opulence and grandeur of the Victorian era, with elegant state rooms, a ballroom, a chapel, and even a Turkish bath. However, the passing of the era and the changing times led to the yacht's decommissioning. As the photograph shows, the once magnificent vessel was now being dismantled, its historic timbers and ornate fittings being carefully removed and salvaged. The end of an era had come for the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert, leaving behind a rich legacy in the annals of maritime and royal history.
