In response to this pressing issue, local businessmen James Hall and his associates established the Wellesley Charity in 1868 to provide shelter and training for these waifs, preparing them for a future in naval service. This evocative photograph captures a moment from the daily life of the institution, as young boys diligently take part in a shoemaking or repairing class on board the Training Ship Wellesley, moored on the River Tyne at North Shields.
