Salamis: A Turning Point in Ancient History - The Persian Defeat (480 BC) This evocative image captures the pivotal moment of the Battle of Salamis, a decisive engagement in the Greco-Persian Wars that took place on the shores of the eponymous Greek island in 480 BC. The Greek fleet, numbering approximately 370 vessels, is depicted triumphantly engaging the much larger Persian fleet, which is estimated to have consisted of over 1000 ships. The Battle of Salamis was a crucial turning point in the Greco-Persian Wars, which had been raging since 490 BC. The Persian king Xerxes I, seeking to avenge his father's defeat at Marathon a decade earlier, had led a massive invasion force into Greece. His plan was to conquer the entire Greek peninsula and bring it under Persian rule. However, the Greeks, under the leadership of Themistocles, had managed to assemble a formidable naval force to confront the Persians at Salamis. The battle raged for several hours, with the Greeks initially holding the upper hand. The turning point came when Themistocles ordered a tactical maneuver, luring the Persian fleet into a narrow channel where they were vulnerable to attack. The Greeks seized the opportunity and inflicted a devastating defeat on the Persians, sinking or capturing over 300 of their ships. The Persian defeat at Salamis was a significant blow to Xerxes' invasion plans. He was forced to abandon his campaign and retreat back to Asia, marking the end of the second Persian invasion of Greece.
