This evocative photograph captures the remains of Baron Manfred von Richthofen's famed red triplane, lying in pieces at the aerodrome of No. 3 Squadron of the Australian Flying Corps near Bertangles during the First World War. The date is 22 April 1918. The image is a poignant reminder of the brutal realities of aerial combat during the Great War. The Baron, also known as the "Red Baron," was a German ace pilot with an impressive record of 80 confirmed victories. His demise came during a dogfight with Canadian pilot Roy Brown and British pilot Arthur Rhys Davies, who are among the allied officers seen in the photograph examining the wreckage.
