LCC-LFB fatal warehouse fire, Langley Street WC2

Three firemen died fighting this blaze in a Covent Garden warehouse in Langley Street. The first crews to arrive, from Clerkenwell fire station, found the warehouse well alight. The building was heavily smoke-logged. As the crews entered the building the roof collapsed with fatal consequences. Station Officer Hawkins and fireman Batt-Rawden were both killed by the fall of debris. Fireman Gadd died later as a result of his injuries. Belfast riots, August 1920

A double page spread from the Illustrated London News, reporting on rioting in Belfast that began on the night of the 23rd August, and continued for a week. The feature is entitled "The worst rioting in the history of Belfast disturbances, which causes 500, 000 damage".Armoured cars and Lewis guns were used to quell the factions, with barbed wire barricades erected in the streets. Pubs and shops were set alight, and effigies were hung from lamposts by Unionists. Date: August 1920

Railway accident at Abbots Ripton, Huntingdonshire

A railway accident at Abbots Ripton, Huntingdonshire (now Cambridgeshire) on the Great Northern Railway. Shown here is the raising of a locomotive from the wreckage. The accident happened when the Flying Scotsman express train from Edinburgh to London was involved in a double collision, during a blizzard, with a coal train and another passenger train. Thirteen passengers were killed, and 59 people injured
