Prince John of Wales

Prince John of Wales (1905-1919), youngest son of King George V and Queen Mary, pictured here wearing a dress. Until after the First World War it was normal to dress small boys and girls in the same clothes, with Johns cropped haircut signifying more effectively his gender. John developed epilepsy at the age of four but lived a normal life as the youngest child of the family. As his epilepsy worsened, doctors advised he would not live long and so in 1917, he was settled at Wood Farm on the Sandringham estate with Mrs Charlotte ( Lala ) Bill, who had nursed him all his life. The family visited when they could and wrote regularly and his grandmother, Queen Alexandra was at nearby Sandringham House. It was a caring environment: John had his own garden and toys and was taken on outings. He died at Wood Farm on January 18th 1919

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical print captures a poignant moment in the life of Prince John of Wales, the youngest son of King George V and Queen Mary. Born in 1905, Prince John lived a relatively normal life despite developing epilepsy at a young age. In this image, he is seen wearing a dress - a common practice at the time for both boys and girls. As his condition worsened, doctors advised that he would not live long. In 1917, he was settled at Wood Farm on the Sandringham estate under the care of Mrs. Charlotte (Lala) Bill. Despite being away from his family, Prince John was surrounded by love and support in this caring environment. Queen Alexandra, his grandmother, resided nearby at Sandringham House and visited regularly to spend time with her beloved grandson. At Wood Farm, Prince John had his own garden and toys and enjoyed outings with Mrs. Bill. Tragically, Prince John passed away on January 18th, 1919 at just 13 years old. His short but impactful life serves as an important reminder of the fragility of human existence and the importance of compassion and care for those facing health challenges. This print is not just a historical artifact but also a tribute to a young prince who left an indelible mark on those around him.
