EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a United States Air Force (USAF) McDonnell F-4C-18-MC Phantom II jet, specifically 63-7478 (msn 471), assigned to the 4453rd Combat Crew Training Wing (CCTW) at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida, circa 1967. The Phantom II was a versatile and iconic military aircraft used extensively during the Cold War. During its tenure with the 4453rd CCTW, this Phantom II was modified into an EF-4C Wild Weasel flak suppression aircraft. The 4453rd CCTW was operational from April 1, 1964, to September 30, 1971, and was home to various squadrons, including the 80th Tactical Fighter Squadron (347th Tactical Fighter Wing) and the 67th Tactical Fighter Squadron (18th Tactical Fighter Wing). Later in its career, this Phantom II was assigned to the Indiana Air National Guard's 113th Tactical Fighter Squadron in 1981. Eventually, it was re-assigned as a battle damage repair trainer to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, in 1989. The F-4C Phantom II, with its distinctive twin-engine configuration and powerful weapon systems, remains an enduring symbol of the United States Air Force's aviation history. This photograph captures a moment in time when this particular aircraft was an integral part of the 4453rd CCTW's mission to train the next generation of combat pilots.
