Tokamak-15 nuclear fusion reactor. Nuclear engineer standing on top of the Tokamak-15 (T-15) nuclear fusion reactor at the Kurchatov Institute of Nuclear Power, near Moscow, Russia. This was the one in a series of nuclear fusion reactors built here using the Soviet tokamak design. It consists of a ring-shaped toroidal chamber in which the plasma is confined using magnets. The T-15 was the first fusion reactor to use superconducting magnets. It operated from 1988 to 2005. Photographed in 1989

The surrealist artist, Salvador Dali (1904-1989), is photographed here with his painting, Vision of War, recently executed at the time for the first major retrospective of his work at The Museum of Modern Art in New York to open in April 1941. At the time he was also working on his autobiography, The Secret Life of Salvador Dali'. The artist and his wife, Gala, had moved to the United States in 1940 to escape the German occupation of France. Date: 02/04/1941
