Aloys Senefelder (1771-1834): The Pioneering German Inventor of Lithography in His Prague Workshop This evocative image captures the enigmatic figure of Aloys Senefelder (1771-1834), the groundbreaking German inventor of lithography, as he demonstrates the intricacies of his revolutionary process in his Prague workshop. Born in Prague, Senefelder's innovative spirit was ignited by his early experiences as a playwright and actor, which eventually led him to explore new methods for producing high-quality prints. In this photograph, Senefelder is shown with intense focus and concentration, meticulously applying a solution of gum arabic, chalk, and water to a flat limestone plate. This process, known as "toning," prepares the surface for the transfer of an image from a drawing made on tracing paper. Once the plate is dry, it is treated with a solution of nitric acid, which etches the image into the stone. Ink is then applied to the plate, which adheres only to the etched areas, leaving the untouched areas blank. The inked plate is then pressed onto paper, transferring the image onto the paper, resulting in a high-quality, detailed print. Senefelder's invention of lithography in 1796 revolutionized the world of printmaking, offering a new medium that allowed for greater detail, tonal range, and the ability to reproduce complex images with ease.
