EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured copperplate engraving, published in Rudolph Ackermann's Repository of Arts in London in 1817, showcases the intricate design of a Regency neoclassical ice house. The ice house, a necessary addition to any aristocratic or landed gentry's country estate, was essential for preserving ice during warmer months to maintain the coolness of their grand homes. The plan reveals a bunker with double walls for effective drainage, ensuring the ice remained frozen. Two porches, labelled A and B, provided shelter from the elements while accessing the ice. Airtraps, marked C, were incorporated to prevent warm air from entering and melting the precious ice. The drain mouth, with a grating, D, allowed for the collection of melted water. The elevation reveals the neoclassical architectural style, with a portico supported by elegant columns, typical of the Regency period. The ice house features a grand staircase, stairs, and various rooms including a dining room, drawing room, music room, library, hall, and a conservatory. A passage connects these spaces. The ice house's design was not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing, reflecting the wealth and refinement of the aristocracy and landed gentry. The intricate details, from the columns to the windows, demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail that was common during this period. This engraving serves as a testament to the grandeur and opulence of Regency neoclassical architecture, providing a glimpse into the lifestyle of the wealthy elite during the early 19th century.
