EDITORS COMMENTS
This image showcases Mary Tudor, the English princess who became Queen Consort of France, as she is depicted in the Galerie Francaise de Femmes Celebres, Paris, 1827. Mary, the only legitimate daughter of King Henry VII of England, is seen wearing the elegant attire befitting a queen. She dons a gable hood, or chaperon, which is a distinctive headpiece of the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The hood is made of blue velvet and adorned with intricate gold embroidery, adding a regal touch to her appearance. Mary's surtout, a long outer garment, is also made of blue velvet and trimmed with gold embroidery. The fur sleeves, known as rebras, add warmth and a touch of luxury to her attire. A jeweled belt cinches her waist, accentuating her figure, while Venetian flat shoes, or pianelles, complete her ensemble. Mary's status as a queen is further emphasized by the opulence of her attire, which reflects the wealth and power of the French court. The handcoloured copperplate engraving by Georges Jacques Gatine, based on an illustration by Louis Marie Lante, captures the essence of Mary Tudor's regal presence and her role as a symbol of the Tudor-Valois alliance between England and France during the early 16th century.
