Underwater Conversation at the Seaside,
EDITORS COMMENTS
20th Century Comic Postcard This delightful comic postcard, titled "Underwater Conversation at the Seaside," captures the playful and innocent spirit of childhood holidays by the sea. The image features a group of children, perched precariously on the edge of a seawall, as if they are about to take a leap into the water below. But instead of diving in, they seem to be engaged in a deep and animated conversation, as if they are submerged in the water already. The humor in this postcard comes from the exaggerated expressions and body language of the children, as well as the surreal underwater setting. The boy in the middle, with a surprised look on his face and his feet dangling in the water, appears to be the one leading the conversation. His companion, with a quizzical expression and a hand raised in mid-gesture, seems to be trying to keep up. The other children in the group, with their wide-eyed gazes and open mouths, add to the sense of wonder and excitement. The wave in the background, crashing against the seawall, adds a sense of energy and movement to the scene. This postcard is reminiscent of the classic British comic postcards produced by Donald McGill and his contemporaries. McGill's postcards were known for their humorous and often risqué images, which poked fun at contemporary social norms and mores. This particular postcard, with its innocent and playful theme, is a great example of the lighter side of McGill's work. Despite the fun and lightheartedness of the image, there is a hint of danger lurking beneath the surface. The children are perched precariously on the seawall, and one can't help but wonder if they are in danger of falling in or even drowning. But the overall mood of the postcard is one of joy and excitement, a celebration of childhood and the simple pleasures of a day at the seaside.
