EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving by Corsi, from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1843, depicts an aquilifer, or eagle-bearer, of the Roman legion. The aquilifer is a crucial figure in the Roman military, responsible for carrying the aquila, the legionary standard in the form of a golden eagle, which symbolized the power and presence of the emperor and the Roman state. The eagle was believed to be a sacred animal and a symbol of Jupiter, the god of the sky and thunder, and of Rome personified. The engraving shows the aquilifer wearing a distinctive helmet with a crest in the shape of a bird, possibly an eagle, and carrying the aquila on a pole. The eagle itself is depicted with outstretched wings, symbolizing the power and protection of the Roman empire. The background of the image features an arch, possibly the Arch of Titus, which commemorates the Roman victory in the Jewish War in 70 AD. The triumphal chariot, pulled by four horses, and the personification of Victory and the goddess Roma are also depicted, emphasizing the connection between military victory and the Roman state. The aquilifer and the eagle were symbols of Roman power and authority, and their presence on the battlefield inspired courage and loyalty among the soldiers. The engraving provides a fascinating glimpse into the historical fashion and iconography of ancient Rome, and the importance of the eagle as a symbol of the empire's power and prestige. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of the handcoloured copperplate engraving add to its historical and artistic significance.
