This evocative photograph captures the legendary Australian soprano, Nellie Melba (Helen Porter Mitchell), in the midst of a historic recording session at Chelmsford in 1920. Melba, who was born in Richmond, Victoria, in 1861, was already an established international star by the time this image was taken. Known for her beautiful voice and captivating stage presence, she had made her debut at the Covent Garden Opera in London in 1888 and went on to perform at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Paris Opera. In this photograph, Melba is seen in profile, her expressive face focused intently on the microphone before her. The microphone, a relatively new technology at the time, would have allowed her voice to be recorded and preserved for posterity.
