EDITORS COMMENTS
This 17th-century print depicts the biblical tale of The Miracle of Elisha, as recorded in 2 Kings 4. The scene unfolds as a widow, distraught over her impending poverty and inability to provide for her family, approaches the prophet Elisha for help. With compassion, Elisha instructs her to gather all the empty jars she can find and bring them to him. As the woman and her friends gather the jars, Elisha prays over one of them, filling it with olive oil. The woman then pours the oil from the first jar into the next, miraculously finding that each jar is filled to the brim. The women continue this process until they have filled all the jars, creating an abundant supply of oil that would sustain them through difficult times. This powerful image from the Old Testament illustrates the prophet's faith and the miraculous provision of God. The use of warm colors and intricate details in the print adds to the sense of awe and wonder, inviting the viewer to reflect on the story's deeper meaning and the faithfulness of God in times of need. The print, created in the late 1600s, is a testament to the enduring power of biblical stories and their ability to inspire and uplift, making it a valuable addition to any collection of religious or historical art.
