This photograph captures a thrilling moment from a wartime variety show put on by the London Fire Brigade's (LFB) 55V station in Forest Hill Central School, Brockley, London SE4, during the 1940s. Amidst the backdrop of World War II, the firemen and firewomen of the 55V station sought solace and camaraderie through the power of performance. The stage, built by the local fire crews, was the setting for an evening filled with music, magic acts, and songs. In this dramatic image, a woman is seen being prepared for a daring magic trick. With the stage lights shining brightly, she steps into a large wooden box, her expression a mix of excitement and apprehension.
