This cabinet photo captures Lionel de Latour Wells (1857-1931), the distinguished Chief Officer of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) from 1896 to 1903. The image, taken by H. & R. Stiles on Kensington High Street in London during the Victorian-Edwardian era, showcases Wells in his full uniform, complete with a brass helmet adorned with insignia, a red fireman's coat, and multiple medals on his chest. The Chief Officer's piercing gaze and stern expression convey a sense of authority and determination. Wells, a Royal Navy veteran, joined the MFB in 1884 and rose through the ranks to become the Chief Officer. Under his leadership, the MFB expanded its fleet of fire engines and improved its training programs.
