Lady Muriel Paget & children, WW1
Lady Muriel Paget (1876 - 1938), nee Finch-Hatton, wife of Sir Richard Surtees Paget, second Baronet of Oldfallings Hall, Wolverhampton. Lady Paget was a humanitarian relief worker, first establishing soup kitchens in the poor districts of London, becoming secretary of the Invalid Kitchens Fund. She then opened a kitchen catering for Belgian refugees in London at the start of the First World War. Her work then extended to Russia and Eastern Europe where she opened field and base hospitals, ambulances and worked indefatigably for the poor and needy both during and after the war - lobbying, training, recruiting social workers and nurses. In 1924 she organised the rescue and relief of stranded Britons in Russia called the British Subjects in Russia Relief Association. Lady Paget had five children, who were cared for by a nanny while their mother worked abroad almost continuously. Pictured here with her three daughters, Sylvia Mary, born 1901, Pamela Winefred, born 1903 and Angela Sibell, born 1906. The Sketch remarks on her work saying, Lady Muriel is much interested in the founding of Invalid Kitchens in the East End, in the running of which she is an expert, and also in various other forms of charitable effort and of war-work. Date: 1917

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant photograph, Lady Muriel Paget (nee Finch-Hatton) is captured with her three daughters, Sylvia Mary, Pamela Winefred, and Angela Sibell, during the tumultuous period of the First World War. Lady Paget, the second Baronetess of Oldfallings Hall in Wolverhampton, was a remarkable humanitarian relief worker whose compassionate spirit and unwavering dedication to the less fortunate transcended the boundaries of her social class. Born into the aristocracy, Lady Paget's commitment to serving the needy began in the poverty-stricken districts of London, where she established soup kitchens and became the secretary of the Invalid Kitchens Fund. As the war commenced, her charitable work expanded to accommodate the influx of Belgian refugees, who found solace in a kitchen she opened in the heart of London. Her selfless efforts did not cease there; they extended to Russia and Eastern Europe, where she tirelessly opened field and base hospitals, ambulances, and worked relentlessly for the impoverished and destitute both during and after the war. The photograph was taken in 1917, a time when Lady Paget's influence was felt far and wide. Her dedication to her cause was so profound that she even lobbied, trained, and recruited social workers and nurses to further her humanitarian endeavors. In 1924, she orchestrated the rescue and relief of stranded British subjects in Russia through the British Subjects in Russia Relief Association. Despite her arduous work, Lady Paget's children, Sylvia, Pamela, and Angela, were never far from her thoughts. They were lovingly cared for by a nanny while their mother worked abroad almost continuously. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of a mother's unwavering commitment to her family and her community, even in the midst of war and adversity. Lady Muriel Paget's legacy continues to inspire generations, a testament to the power of compassion and determination in the face of adversity.
