Founded in 1518, it was the centre of shipping commerce in the Caribbean Sea during the latter half of the 17th century. It was destroyed by an earthquake in 1692 and subsequent fires, hurricanes, flooding, and another earthquake in 1907.. Part of Box 108. Boswell Collection. Slide number 47. Port Royal, an ancient city located at the end of the Palisadoes and the mouth of Kingston Harbour in south-eastern Jamaica, was founded in 1518 and served as the hub of shipping commerce in the Caribbean Sea during the latter half of the 17th century. The city's strategic location made it a thriving center for maritime activities, attracting merchants, pirates, and sailors from around the world. However, Port Royal's prosperity was short-lived. In 1692, a devastating earthquake struck the city, followed by subsequent fires, hurricanes, and flooding, which destroyed much of the city. The last major disaster occurred in 1907.
