EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting photograph captures The Hon. Mrs Mitford, Sidney Gibson Bowles (1880-1963), in her elegant yachting attire during Cowes Week in 1907. Sidney, the eldest daughter of Thomas Gibson Bowles, was a prominent figure in Edwardian society, known for her exceptional beauty and grace. Her father was the founder of The Lady and English Vanity Fair magazines, as well as a Member of Parliament. Cowes Week, an annual sailing regatta held in the English town of Cowes on the Isle of Wight, was a highly anticipated social event in the summer season. The event attracted the cream of British society, who would come together to enjoy the sailing races, lavish parties, and social engagements. In this photograph, Sidney wears a stylish straw boater hat and a crisp white blouse with a high collar and long sleeves. Her yachting costume consists of a fitted skirt and a pair of breeches, which were popular amongst women who participated in sailing activities during this era. The nautical theme is further emphasized by her white gloves and the boat in the background. Sidney's children, the famous and infamous Mitford sisters, would later make headlines for their scandalous antics and controversial political beliefs. However, in this moment, Sidney embodies the grace and elegance of an Edwardian lady enjoying the summer season and the thrill of yachting at Cowes Week.
