This photograph captures the historic moment of The Great Eastern, a colossal steam ship designed by the ingenious Isambard Kingdom Brunel, undergoing construction at Millwall Shipyard in 1857. At the time of her launch in December 1858, The Great Eastern held the title as the largest steam ship in the world, measuring an impressive 30th in length and 21 feet in breadth. Although her launch was met with great fanfare, her career as a passenger ship was short-lived and ultimately considered a failure. However, The Great Eastern's story did not end there. In 1865 and 1866, she played a pivotal role in the groundbreaking laying of the Transatlantic telegraph cable, connecting Europe and North America, revolutionizing communication and bringing the world closer together. The ship's innovative use in this endeavor solidified her place in maritime history. Despite her historical significance, The Great Eastern was eventually scrapped in 1888.
