EDITORS COMMENTS
This monochrome photograph, dated 1890, depicts a remarkable group of exotic animals gathered in the grounds of Tring Park. Among them are an Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae), a Rhea (Rhea americana), and several Kangaroos (Macropus rufus), all of which were part of the collection amassed by Sir Walter Rothschild (1868-1937), a renowned 19th-century British naturalist. Sir Walter, who was also known as Lord Lionel Walter Rothschild, was a passionate collector of both plants and animals. He was particularly interested in birds, and his collection included a vast array of avian species, from the Casuariiformes order, such as the Emu and Rhea, to the Mollusca order, represented here by a Cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis). In this photograph, we see Sir Walter's dedicated keeper, Mr. Marcham, standing amongst the animals. The menagerie at Tring Park was a significant attraction, drawing visitors from far and wide to witness the unusual collection of creatures. The animals in this photograph belong to the Diprotodontia order, which includes the Macropodidae family, of which the Kangaroo is a member. The Emu and Rhea, however, are Ratites, a group of flightless birds that also includes the Ostrich and the Kiwi. This photograph provides a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a unique insight into the world of natural history and the remarkable collection amassed by Sir Walter Rothschild in the grounds of Tring Park.
