Coloured X-ray of the Nautilus shell

Nautilus shell. Coloured X-ray of the cephalopod shell, Nautilus pompilius. This is the common chambered or pearly Nautilus. The shell is empty of contents, with inner chambers and spiral whorls visible. The external colour of the shell is off- white, with radial bands of a tan colour. The siphuncle tube is clearly seen here, passing from one shell chamber to another; this internal tube fills the chambers with gas and enables the Nautilus to float or sink. There are only 6 living species of Nautilus, descended from a large group which originated in the early Palaeozoic era. The animal resembles a squid in having a foot of many tentacles. It feeds on crabs and carrion

Doryaspis swim amongst a bed of Anthozoa

8-inch-long jawless fish of the genus Doryaspis swim amongst a bed of Anthozoa of the order Actiniaria (AKA sea anemones) 410 million years ago in what is today the Svalbard archipelago in Norway. Doryaspis (AKA Lyktaspis) was armored with bony spines and a long snout that had spines set along its length (somewhat like the saw of a modern sawfish). Doryaspis mouth opened above, rather than below the snout, and is believed to have dined on plankton. However the snout may have been used to stir up small crustaceans from the mud or sand.
In addition to a variety of anemones are palm-like crinoids (class Crinoidea), pentagonal-shaped sea stars, nautilus-like ammonites, and squid-like nautiloid cephalopods of the genus Orthoceras

Fossilised ammonite (Asteroceras obtusum) Featured Image

Fossilised ammonite (Asteroceras obtusum)

Fossilised ammonite (Asteroceras obtusum). Ammonites are an extinct group of molluscs that are thought to be related to modern cephalopods such as octopus, squid and cuttlefish. They emerged during the early Devonian era (about 400 million years ago) and became extinct 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous period. This Asteroceras obtusum fossil dates back to the Jurassic period (about 200-145 million years ago) and was found in Lyme Regis in Dorset, UK
