EDITORS COMMENTS
This CDV (carte-de-visite) photograph captures the enigmatic figure of John William Colenso, Bishop of Natal from 1853 to 1883. Born in 1814 in England, Colenso's unorthodox views and championing of the rights of the native population would ultimately lead to his controversial deposition from the Anglican Church. Colenso's commitment to social justice and equality began early in his career when he advocated for the education and empowerment of the Zulu people. In the mid-19th century, as European settlers encroached upon Natal, Colenso became a vocal critic of the Boers' treatment of the indigenous population. His outspokenness earned him both admiration from the natives and ire from the colonial authorities. Despite facing numerous challenges, Colenso remained steadfast in his beliefs. He translated the Bible into the Zulu language, which was a groundbreaking achievement at the time. However, his most controversial act came in 1862 when he published "The Pentateuch and the Book of Joshua Critically Examined," in which he questioned the historical accuracy of certain biblical passages. This work was considered heretical by the Anglican Church, and Colenso was eventually tried and deposed in 1883. This photograph of John William Colenso was likely taken during his later years, when he was no longer the Bishop of Natal. The image captures the intensity and determination in his eyes, reflecting the passion and conviction that defined his life and career. Despite being deposed, Colenso's legacy as a champion for the rights of the native population in Natal endures, making him a significant figure in the history of South Africa.
