EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of John William Colenso, the influential Bishop of Natal in 1875. With his spectacles perched on his nose, he exudes an air of wisdom and intellectual curiosity. Colenso was a man ahead of his time, challenging traditional biblical teachings and advocating for the rights of indigenous people in Southern Africa. His liberal treatment of the Zulu community earned him both admiration and controversy within the church hierarchy. In this portrait, we see Colenso's profile highlighted against a monochrome background, emphasizing his strong presence as a religious leader. The engraving beautifully showcases his distinguished features - from his neatly groomed beard to the thoughtful expression on his face. As an Anglican bishop representing Britain's interests in South Africa during the height of colonialism, Colenso played a pivotal role in championing justice for oppressed communities like the Zulus. His close relationship with members of their royal family further solidified his commitment to their cause. This image serves as a powerful reminder not only of Colenso's significant contributions but also highlights how religion can be used as a force for positive change within society. It is through individuals like him that progress is made and marginalized voices are amplified. The print stands as a testament to John William Colenso's enduring legacy as an advocate for equality, compassion, and understanding amidst turbulent times in 19th-century South Africa.
