Here, Herakles is shown in determined resolve as he grasps the leash of the fearsome three-headed dog, Cerberus. The Underworld's watchdog, Cerberus guards the gates of Hades, preventing the dead from returning to the land of the living. Herakles' mission was to capture Cerberus and bring him back to the surface as proof of his twelve labors completed. The historical and mythological significance of this scene is profound. Herakles, the demigod son of Zeus and Alcmene, was known for his incredible strength and bravery. His twelve labors were trials set upon him by King Eurystheus as penance for killing his family in a fit of madness.
