EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment of respite and camaraderie among young boys on board the Training Ship Exmouth, moored on the River Thames off Grays, Essex, in the early 1920s. Established in 1876 by the Metropolitan Asylums Board, the Exmouth was one of several training ships operated to provide education and training in seamanship to boys aged 12-15, many of whom had come from London workhouses and other institutions. Dressed in their navy-blue uniforms, the boys appear focused on enjoying their buns, a small pleasure in the midst of their rigorous training. The original wooden vessel, which had been in use since 1876, was replaced in 1903 by an identical iron and steel ship to ensure the safety and comfort of the boys. This historical image offers a glimpse into the past, when the Exmouth played a vital role in transporting and training young boys in essential skills that would prepare them for a future in the naval services. The photograph also serves as a poignant reminder of the poverty and housing conditions that many children faced during the Victorian era and beyond.
