EDITORS COMMENTS
Boys at Drill on the Training Ship Exmouth, Grays, Essex (1876-1929) This evocative photograph captures a moment in time as boys, aged 12-15, undergo rigorous drill training on the Training Ship Exmouth, moored on the River Thames off Grays, Essex. Established in 1876 by the Metropolitan Asylums Board, the Exmouth provided a vital educational and training opportunity for boys who often came from London workhouses and impoverished backgrounds. The boys are dressed in their navy-blue uniforms, a testament to their commitment and discipline. The iron and steel vessel, which replaced the original unsafe wooden one in 1903, looms in the background, a symbol of the industrial era and the importance of transport and maritime skills in the late Victorian and early 20th century. The Training Ship Exmouth offered these boys essential training in seamanship, with many going on to join the naval services. The drill session depicted in the photograph is a crucial aspect of their education, instilling discipline, teamwork, and the necessary skills to navigate the waters and serve in the navy. The photograph transports us back to the 1870s and 1880s, a time when the Metropolitan Asylums Board and other organizations sought to provide alternatives to the workhouse system for the care and education of children in poverty. The Training Ship Exmouth, with its focus on practical skills and training, was a vital component of this effort. As we observe the boys marching in formation on the deck, we are reminded of the rich history of maritime training and the importance of education in shaping the lives of young people, even in the most challenging of circumstances.
