This evocative photograph captures the aftermath of an air raid on Old Street in the City of London during the Blitz of September 7, 1940. The scene is filled with the destruction and chaos of war, as firefighters from the London Fire Brigade work tirelessly to extinguish the fires that have broken out following the bombing. Debris and rubble litter the roadway, creating a maze of obstacles for the firemen to navigate as they make their way to the heart of the damage. In the foreground, a fireman in full protective gear can be seen hosing down the remains of a building, while his comrade prepares a hose reel. The smoky atmosphere hangs heavy over the area, a constant reminder of the destruction wrought by the bombs. The area was home to numerous businesses, including Gilberts Wholesale Cabinet Manufacturers and Saville Gowns, whose premises can be seen in the background, partially destroyed and engulfed in flames.
