Torbay Regatta: the schooner-yachts starting from Torquay, 1864. Creator: Unknown
Torbay Regatta: the schooner-yachts starting from Torquay, 1864. Engraving from a sketch by Mr. G. Whitaker. The course was three times round the bay, starting from a point just outside the pier and Beacon Rock...[illustration also shows] Berry Head and Brixham...The yachts which were entered for this race were the Vestal...belonging to Sir Bruce Chichester; the Madcap...Mr. J. Abbott Dunbar; the Blue Bell...Mr. F. Edwards; and the Albertine...Lord Londesborough...the wind died away in the afternoon, and after going once round the bay they were obliged to desist from the race...On the next day...the match was again sailed...The rules were that the course should be sailed over three times, the committee exercising the right of stopping the yachts after the second round, if there was no chance of doing the third in time. This right they exercised, for at eight o'clock only two rounds were finished. The Albertine was in about two minutes and a half ahead of the Madcap, but lost the prize, as she had to allow the Madcap nearly half an hour for difference of tonnage. The winner made the two rounds in exactly eight hours'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864
