EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Tewkesbury Abbey in Gloucestershire, taken in 2010. Steeped in history, this abbey was established as a Benedictine monastery back in 1107. Its significance is not only rooted in its architectural grandeur but also in the remarkable tale of survival it holds. During the tumultuous period of the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539, when numerous religious institutions were destroyed, Tewkesbury Abbey miraculously escaped such fate. The townspeople rallied together and purchased the abbey to ensure its preservation as their parish church. This act of devotion allowed generations to come to continue utilizing this sacred space for worship. Within these hallowed walls lies an even more poignant story: that of Edward, Prince of Wales. Tragically killed during the Battle of Tewkesbury on May 4th, 1471 amidst the War of Roses conflict, his final resting place became this very church. The photograph beautifully captures not just a building but a testament to resilience and community spirit. The stunning architecture stands tall against a backdrop that exudes tranquility and serenity—a true representation of England's rich heritage. Photographer Peter Thompson skillfully brings forth every intricate detail with vibrant colors and exquisite composition. This image serves as a reminder that our past is intricately woven into our present; it beckons us to appreciate both the physical beauty before us and the stories etched within its walls.
