Lisbon Bar during a Gale of Wind, 1858. Creator: Smyth
Lisbon Bar during a Gale of Wind, 1858....an incident is depicted which shows the effective means possessed by our Royal Mail packets for saving life at sea, and the promptitude with which their officers and crew devote themselves when duty calls. Our Sketch represents the Peninsular and Oriental Company's Lisbon mail-packet Alhambra, herself locked within the bar and debarred from all possible egress on account of the breakers caused by continued westerly gales. Off the Point, however, she observed "a friend" in distress - a merchant-ship hard and fast, French colours flying, her canvas still standing, and the sea making clean breaches over her. It was decided to send to her assistance the ship's life-boat, under the experienced hands of Mr. Robert E. Penkey, chief officer, with Mr. William Hume, third, and a dozen seamen volunteers. Daring every danger, on they sped, gallantly breasting winds and waves, till, approaching the wreck, they discovered that the crew had already taken to their own boats. Nothing, therefore, justifying further risk, Mr. Penkey made again for his ship, where, though fruitless as it happened in his mission of good, the safe return of the boat's crew was hailed with no less hearty acclamations by all on board'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Lisbon Bar during a Gale of Wind, 1858" is a captivating photograph by Smyth that portrays a thrilling moment of maritime bravery and camaraderie. The image depicts the Peninsular and Oriental Company's mail-packet, Alhambra, battling the relentless waves of the Lisbon Bar, a notoriously treacherous stretch of water near Lisbon, Portugal. The Alhambra is shown trapped within the bar, unable to escape due to the continuous westerly gales that have caused dangerous breakers. Despite the perilous conditions, the Alhambra's crew, led by Chief Officer Robert E. Penkey and Third Officer William Hume, did not hesitate to answer a distress call from a stranded merchant ship off the Point. With a dozen brave seamen, they launched the ship's lifeboat, bravely navigating through the towering waves and gales. Their mission was to rescue the crew of the distressed vessel, which was flying French colors and had its sails still standing, as the sea broke mercilessly over it. Upon reaching the wreck, the intrepid rescuers discovered that the crew had already managed to abandon ship and had taken to their own boats. Realizing that no further risk was necessary, Mr. Penkey made the decision to return to the Alhambra. Though the mission had ultimately proven fruitless in terms of saving lives, the safe return of the lifeboat's crew was met with hearty acclamations from all aboard the Alhambra. This photograph is a testament to the courage and quick thinking of the sailors of the Peninsular and Oriental Company during a time of crisis. It also showcases the effective means these vessels possessed for saving lives at sea and the promptitude with which their officers and crew devoted themselves to duty. This incident, as reported in the "Illustrated London News" in 1858, is a powerful reminder of the heroism and resilience of those who braved the vast and unpredictable oceans of the past.
