EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Leon Trotsky, his wife Natalia Sedova, and their son Lev Sedov in Alma Ata, USSR in 1928. Trotsky, a prominent figure of the Russian Revolution and subsequent Soviet government, can be seen with his family during a time of great turmoil. After losing the power struggle to Joseph Stalin following Lenin's death, Trotsky was expelled from the Communist Party on November 12th, 1927. In January 1928, he was exiled to Alma Ata (now Almaty) in Kazakhstan before eventually being banished from the Soviet Union altogether. This image showcases not only the personal side of this political leader but also highlights the impact that these events had on his family. The photograph features an animal companion by their side – a dog who perhaps provided some solace during this challenging period. Natalia Sedova is depicted wearing glasses while standing beside her husband; she played an active role alongside Trotsky throughout their revolutionary journey. This historical artifact is currently housed in the State Museum of Political History in St Petersburg and serves as a testament to one man's rise and fall within the communist movement. It symbolizes both triumphs and tribulations experienced by individuals caught up in political upheaval during this tumultuous era.
