John Wycliffe, 14th century English religious reformer, 1882

John Wycliffe, 14th century English religious reformer, 1882. Wycliffe (c1329-1384) embarked on a translation of the Bible into English in order to bypass the established Church and make the word of God accesible to all literate people. A controversial opponent of the established Catholic Church who questioned the doctrine of transubstantiation, he was the leader of the religious movement known as the Lollards (Mumblers). Wycliffe was blamed by his ecclesiastical superiors for inciting the Peasants Revolt of 1381, and many of his writings were banned. His works were an inspiration to the leaders of the Reformation, including Martin Luther

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white portrait print captures the essence of John Wycliffe, a prominent 14th-century English religious reformer. In this image from 1882, Wycliffe's piercing gaze and strong features are highlighted by his long beard and traditional medieval clothing. His hat adds an air of authority to his presence. Wycliffe was a man ahead of his time, challenging the established Catholic Church and its doctrines. He believed in making the word of God accessible to all literate people, which led him to undertake the monumental task of translating the Bible into English. This act aimed to bypass the control exerted by the Church over religious texts. As leader of the Lollards, a religious movement known for their dissenting views against Catholicism, Wycliffe faced significant opposition from ecclesiastical authorities. Accused of inciting rebellion during the Peasants Revolt in 1381, he became a controversial figure whose writings were banned. Despite these challenges, Wycliffe's works served as inspiration for future leaders of religious reform movements such as Martin Luther during the Reformation era. His ideas laid important foundations for questioning established dogmas within Christianity. This engraving offers us a glimpse into an influential figure who challenged societal norms and fought for greater access to spiritual knowledge. It serves as a testament to John Wycliffe's enduring impact on theology and religion in both medieval England and beyond.
