The First Western Party in a Natural Ice-Tunnel, c1911, (1913). Artist: T Griffith Taylor
The First Western Party in a Natural Ice-Tunnel Amid The Pinnacles of the Koettlitz Glacier (Edgar Evans standing), c1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. The First Western Party in a Natural Ice-Tunnel, c1911
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that captures the spirit of adventure and scientific exploration during the Terra Nova Expedition. Taken by artist T Griffith Taylor, this image showcases the remarkable beauty and harsh conditions of the Antarctic landscape. In this photograph, we see members of Captain Robert Falcon Scott's team standing proudly inside a natural ice-tunnel amid the towering pinnacles of the Koettlitz Glacier. The expedition included individuals from various fields such as geology, zoology, surgery, photography, engineering, skiing, meteorology, and physics. Their goal was to conduct scientific research while aiming to be the first to reach the South Pole. Led by Scott himself and accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans (seen standing in this photo), they successfully reached their long-awaited destination on 17 January 1912. However, their triumph quickly turned into heartbreak when they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them to it just a month earlier. Tragically delayed by blizzards and facing dwindling supplies on their return journey from the Pole, Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March. It would take eight months before their bodies were found along with their poignant diaries. This powerful image serves as a testament to both human resilience in extreme environments and our unyielding pursuit of knowledge even in face of insurmountable challenges.
