Preparing Sledges for the Polar Journey (Crean, Forde, Lashly, P. O. Evans), c1911, (1913)

Preparing Sledges for the Polar Journey (Crean, Forde, Lashly, P.O. Evans), c1911, (1913). Tom Crean, Petty Officer Robert Forde, stoker William Lashly and Petty Officer Edgar Evans. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a poignant moment in history, showcasing the brave men who embarked on the final expedition of Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Titled "Preparing Sledges for the Polar Journey" this image from 1911 depicts Tom Crean, Petty Officer Robert Forde, stoker William Lashly, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans as they gear up for their arduous journey to the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913) was an ambitious endeavor that aimed to continue scientific research while also achieving the historic feat of reaching the geographic South Pole. Led by Scott, this diverse team included experts in various fields such as geology, zoology, photography, and meteorology. Sadly, upon reaching their destination on January 17th, 1912, Scott and his companions discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them to it by a month. Trapped by blizzards and dwindling supplies during their return journey, Scott's team tragically perished at the end of March. Their bodies were found eight months later alongside heart-wrenching diaries documenting their struggle. This photograph serves as a testament to the indomitable spirit and determination of these explorers who risked everything in pursuit of knowledge and adventure. It stands as a reminder of both human resilience in extreme conditions and the sacrifices made in pushing boundaries for scientific discovery.
