EDITORS COMMENTS
The historic moment captured in this print showcases the first meeting of two influential figures who would shape the course of history - Vladimir Ilich Lenin and Joseph Stalin. Taking place in Tammerfors, Finland, in December 1905, this encounter marked a significant turning point for Russian communism. The backdrop for this clandestine meeting was the Workers Hall in Tampere, which served as a gathering place for underground discussions by members of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party. In this monochrome image, we witness the powerful symbolism of a handshake between these political revolutionaries. Lenin, known as Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov before adopting his revolutionary pseudonym, was an ardent Marxist and leader of the Bolshevik Party. His ideas laid the foundation for Soviet communism and he played a pivotal role in establishing the Soviet Union. Stalin, born Ioseb Besarionis dze Jughashvili but later adopting his famous surname meaning "man of steel" would go on to become one of history's most notorious dictators. As General Secretary of the Communist Party and later Premier of the Soviet Union, Stalin implemented policies that led to immense social upheaval and millions of deaths. This photograph serves as a reminder not only of their initial encounter but also foreshadows their future collaboration within Russia's communist movement. It encapsulates an era defined by rebellion against established systems and ideologies while setting into motion events that would reshape nations and alter global politics forever.
