EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Andrew Johnson, the 17th President of the United States, during the 1860s. Johnson, who served as Abraham Lincoln's vice-president and succeeded him after his tragic assassination, faced a tumultuous presidency marked by bitter confrontations with Congress. Known for his policies of conciliation towards the South following the Civil War and his vetoing of civil rights bills, Johnson found himself at odds with Radical Republicans in Congress. Their attempts to impeach him were met with fierce resistance from Johnson's supporters, narrowly avoiding removal from office by just one vote in the Senate. Defeated by Ulysses Grant in the 1868 presidential election, Johnson's final act as president was granting unconditional amnesty to all Confederates on Christmas Day 1868. This decision reflected his desire for reconciliation and healing within a divided nation. The photograph itself is a remarkable piece of history captured by renowned photographer Mathew Brady. Published in James D Horan's book "Historian with a Camera" this print offers us an intimate glimpse into Andrew Johnson's presidency and serves as a reminder of the challenges he faced during this pivotal period in American history. As we observe this image today, we are reminded of both the complexities and enduring legacy left behind by President Andrew Johnson – a man whose actions shaped our nation during one of its most transformative eras.
