Yosemite Fall, 1872. Creator: Alfred Harral Featured Image

Yosemite Fall, 1872. Creator: Alfred Harral

Yosemite Fall, 1872. Waterfall in Yosemite National Park, California, USA. Yosemite Fall is described as grand beyond all power of expression. The summit of the upper fall is a little over two thousand six hundred feet above the valley; for fifteen hundred feet the descent is absolutely vertical, and the rock is like a wall of masonry. Before this, the fall of water sways and sweeps, yielding to the force of the fitful wind with a marvellous grace and endless variety of motion. For a moment it descends with continuous roar; in another instant it is caught, and, reversing its flight, rises upward in wreathing, eddying mists, finally fading out like a summer cloud. The full-page illustration is taken from a clump of pine-trees so near that, by the rapid foreshortening, the entire fall appears in very different proportions from those seen from the opposite side of the valley'. From "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. I, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1872]

Entrance to Thousand Islands, 1874. Creator: John J. Harley

Entrance to Thousand Islands, 1874. An artist sketching at Thousand Islands, an archipelago of 1,864 islands in the Saint Lawrence River, on the Canada-US border. ...the Thousand Islands number one thousand six hundred and ninety-two, as may be ascertained in the Treaty of Ghent!...our steamer...threads her way through the thirty-nine miles which they thickly intersperse. In size they differ much, however, some being only a few yards in extent, and others several miles. The verdure on most of them is limited to a sturdy growth of fir and pine, with occasionally some scrubby undergrowth, which sprouts with northern vigor from crevices in the rocky bed'. From "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. General McClellans headquarters, Antietam, Maryland, American Civil War, 1861-1862 (1955)

General McClellan's headquarters, Antietam, Maryland, American Civil War, 1861-1862 (1955). Only a few federal officers knew that the man seated with a cigar in his hand was Allan Pinkerton, founder of the famous detective agency. Pinkerton, who organized the Union intelligence service, was known only as Major Allen'. Directly behind him is John C Babcock, who worked under Pinkerton. Next to him is George H Bangs, later a famous Pinkerton superintendent. Another Pinkerton operative, Angus K Littlefield, is on the left and the other seated man is William Moore, Secretary of War Edwin McMasters Stanton's private secretary.
