Andrew Johnson, 17th President of the United States, 1860s (1955)
Andrew Johnson, 17th President of the United States, 1860s (1955). Johnson (1808-1875) was Abraham Lincoln's vice-president and succeeded Lincoln as president after his assassination. His policies of conciliation towards the South after the Civil War and his vetoing of civil rights bills led to bitter confrontation with the Radical Republicans in Congress. They made two attemts to have Johnson impeached, the second of which only failed by one vote in the Senate. He was defeated by Ulysses S Grant in the 1868 presidential election and one of his last acts in office was to grant an unconditional amnesty to all Confederates on Christmas Day 1868. General McClellan's headquarters, Antietam, Maryland, American Civil War, 1861-1862 (1955). Only a few federal officers knew that the man seated with a cigar in his hand was Allan Pinkerton, founder of the famous detective agency. Pinkerton, who organized the Union intelligence service, was known only as Major Allen'. Directly behind him is John C Babcock, who worked under Pinkerton. Next to him is George H Bangs, later a famous Pinkerton superintendent. Another Pinkerton operative, Angus K Littlefield, is on the left and the other seated man is William Moore, Secretary of War Edwin McMasters Stanton's private secretary. John Cabell Breckinridge, American politician, c1860s (1955). Before the Civil War Breckinridge (1821-1875) served as a US Senator representing Kentucky, then as the 14th Vice-President of the United States, the youngest holder of that office. He ran, unsuccessfully, for President in the 1860 election. After serving as a general in both the western and eastern theatres in the Civil War, he was appointed Conferate Secretary of War in 1865, a post he held until the conflict ended. Fearing charges of treason he fled into exile, but returned to the US in 1869 after being granted an amnesty.
