Abd-el-Kader, from an authentic French portrait, 1845. Creator: Unknown
Abd-el-Kader, from an authentic French portrait, 1845. Emir Abdelkader, an Algerian religious and military leader, led a struggle against the French colonial invasion in North Africa. Abd-el-Kader has appealed to the religious enthusiasm of his countrymen, and this he directs with great skill and activity. His mode of warfare is predatory - the most difficult to meet effectually in such a country. He has several times narrowly escaped being taken, once solely by a daring leap on horseback; but as yet has defied all the efforts of the French, though they have offered a reward of Four Thousand Pounds for his head. He keeps up a harassing war, in which the French can gain nothing and lose a great deal...such is his influence over the Mahommetan population, that it is not impossible he may seize the Throne of Morocco for himself. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Abd-el-Kader, a prominent figure in Algerian history during the 19th century. The portrait, believed to be an authentic French depiction from 1845, captures the essence of this influential man. Abd-el-Kader was not only a religious leader but also a skilled military strategist who led his people in their resistance against French colonial invasion in North Africa. Known for his ability to rally his countrymen with religious fervor, Abd-el-Kader proved to be a formidable opponent for the French forces. His predatory style of warfare posed significant challenges for the invaders in such treacherous terrain. Despite numerous close encounters and even a daring escape on horseback, he managed to elude capture by the French authorities. The impact of Abd-el-Kader's leadership extended beyond military prowess; he held immense influence over the Muslim population. Such was his sway that there were whispers of him potentially seizing the throne of Morocco for himself—an indication of both his charisma and ambition. This intriguing image comes from an edition of "Illustrated London News" published in 1845, shedding light on how news traveled across borders even during that era. It serves as a reminder of Algeria's struggle against colonialism and offers insight into one man's determination to protect his homeland and preserve its cultural identity amidst foreign intrusion.
