Prince Arthur (1850-1942) was the third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He was named after one of his godfathers, Field Marshal Arthur, 1st Duke of Wellington, on whose 81st birthday he was born.
In 1879, Arthur married Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia. She was the daughter of Prince Friedrich Karl and a great-niece of Kaiser Wilhelm I (another of Arthurs godfathers). To mark the occasion, he was appointed colonel of the 3rd Zieten Hussars, a regiment of the Imperial German Army. From 1904, he served as its colonel-in-chief and in 1906 he was appointed a field marshal in the German Army.
Although purely ceremonial, these appointments reflected his familyAs close German ties. His mother, Queen Victoria, was the last British monarch from the House of Hanover. Through Prince ArthurAs father, Prince Albert, he was also Duke of Saxony and Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.); eNational Army Museum; German, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the tunic worn by HRH The Duke of Connaught, who served in the 3rd Zieten Hussars of the German Army before 1914. The tunic, displayed at the National Army Museum in London, represents an important chapter in Prince Arthur's life. Prince Arthur, born in 1850 as the third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, was named after his godfather Field Marshal Arthur, 1st Duke of Wellington. In 1879, he married Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia, further solidifying his ties to Germany. To commemorate this union and highlight his close German connections, Prince Arthur was appointed colonel of the prestigious 3rd Zieten Hussars regiment. Over time, Prince Arthur's involvement with the regiment grew deeper. By 1904, he became its colonel-in-chief and later achieved a remarkable milestone when he was appointed a field marshal in the German Army in 1906. While these appointments were largely ceremonial and reflected his family's strong German affiliations – including being part of both House Hanover and Saxe-Coburg-Gotha – they symbolized Prince Arthur's dedication to military service and honor. The photograph captures not only a beautifully preserved tunic but also serves as a reminder of Prince Arthur's unique position within both British and German society during that era. It offers us a glimpse into history while showcasing an individual who navigated complex political landscapes with grace and dignity.
