EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph print from the 19th century showcases Francis Trovillou, known as the Horned Man, who lived during the 16th century. Born in Mezieres, France, Trovillou developed a peculiar horn on his forehead at the tender age of seven. His extraordinary appearance drew attention and curiosity from people far and wide. In 1598, Trovillou was exhibited in Paris where he caught the eye of surgeon Fabritius. The surgeon examined him closely and documented his findings in Chirurgical Observations. Unfortunately, shortly after this examination, Trovillou passed away. Created by Robert Cooper through stipple engraving techniques, this lithograph is based on an original work found in Henry Wilson and James Caulfields' Book of Wonderful Characters. The book delves into memoirs and anecdotes about remarkable individuals throughout history. The image captures Trovillou's unique physical feature with great detail while also portraying him as a street entertainer or busker playing a woodwind instrument. This juxtaposition highlights both his deformity and musical talent. Francis Trovillou's story serves as a testament to human curiosity and our fascination with unusual phenomena. It sheds light on how society viewed those with physical abnormalities during that time period while emphasizing their resilience amidst adversity.
