Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers.
Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. However, for a contemporary audience, the posters sometimes express uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of the Empire today.); © Manchester Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant print titled "Union of South Africa, Australia, New Zealand" captures the essence of a bygone era. Created in 1927 as part of the series "Where Our Exports Go" it showcases the strong bond between these three nations and their connection to Great Britain. Commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board, this artwork was intended to promote sales of British goods in the Southern Dominions. The statistics proudly displayed on the print reveal that our fellow citizens in these regions purchased an impressive £55 million worth of British products from January to June 1927 alone. Printed by Haylock, Cadle & Graham Ltd for HMSO, this piece is now housed at Manchester Art Gallery in the UK. The gallery boasts a captivating collection of artist-designed posters commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board during its existence from 1926 to 1933. While these posters serve as historical artifacts showcasing people, places, and products within the British Empire, they also provoke contemplation about its legacy today. For contemporary viewers, they may raise uncomfortable questions about imperialism's impact and influence. The image itself exudes vibrancy with its colorful lithography technique. It invites us to reflect upon a time when trade connections forged strong bonds between nations across vast distances. This photograph serves as a visual reminder of how commerce can unite countries and shape their shared histories.
