The Soldiers Return, or Rare News for Old England
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating hand-coloured etching published by Hannah Humphrey in 1791. The artwork, created by James Gillray, offers a satirical take on the marriage of Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, and Frederica Charlotte Ulrica Catherina, Duchess of York and Albany. In this humorous scene, the Duke and Duchess are depicted walking arm in arm like tramping soldiers. The Duke carries a large bundle inscribed with an eye-catching sum of L. 3000000 while using his sabre as a walking stick. Meanwhile, the pregnant Duchess carries a money bag labeled "Pin Money £50000 Pr Annm". Behind them stands a castle with the flag of Berlin. The caricature highlights various aspects of their union that were widely discussed at the time. The beauty of the Duchess, her tiny foot (a symbol of femininity), and her substantial dowry were all subjects that captured public attention. Gillray's intricate details bring this satire to life; from the Duke's regimentals adorned with his star to the simple straw hat tilted back on the Duchess' head to reveal her tiara. "The Soldiers Return" serves as both entertainment and social commentary on royal marriages during that era. It invites viewers to reflect upon societal expectations placed upon couples in positions of power while offering light-hearted amusement through its exaggerated portrayal. This print provides us with an intriguing glimpse into history through artistry—a reminder that even centuries ago, political unions sparked curiosity and conversation among people from all walks of life.
