Moment of Terror (Colour Litho)
2783991 Moment of Terror (Colour Litho) by Beltrame, Achille (1871-1945); Private Collection; (add.info.: A moment of terror... A street sweeper busy at his job, in Cuneo, near the baracconi of a fair, sees people running away. Whats going on? She feels a weight on her shoulders, a warm breath on her neck, turns around, a lioness! But the poor man, who could already be seen... eaten, didn t even get a scratch. The beast had gone out for a moment on the square having found the door of the cage open; and had approached the scavenger almost for fun, hearing, then, the voice of the watchman, who rushed to get it back, and meekly returned to the kennel. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Moment of Terror" we are transported to a scene filled with fear and suspense. The image captures a street sweeper diligently going about his job in Cuneo, Italy, near the bustling baracconi of a fair. Suddenly, chaos ensues as people start running away in panic. What could be happening? As our eyes wander through the picture, we notice something extraordinary - a lioness lurking behind the unsuspecting janitor. With her paws resting on his shoulders and warm breath on his neck, it seems like an imminent attack is about to occur. However, against all odds, the man remains unharmed. This incredible moment unfolds due to an unexpected turn of events. The lioness had managed to escape from her cage momentarily when she discovered its door open. In what seemed like playful curiosity rather than aggression, she approached the bewildered scavenger. Fortunately for him, the watchman's voice alerted both predator and prey alike. Rushing towards them with urgency, he successfully guided the lioness back into her kennel without any harm caused. This powerful illustration originally appeared in Courier Sunday in March 1940 and was created by Achille Beltrame (1871-1945), an acclaimed Italian illustrator known for his attention to detail and ability to capture dramatic moments such as this one. The photograph serves as a reminder that sometimes even moments of terror can end without tragedy if fate intervenes at just the right time.
