2809170 The feats of the Irish rebels (Colour Litho) by Beltrame, Achille (1871-1945); Private Collection; (add.info.: The feats of the Irish rebels. Having stopped a freight train in the vicinity of Dublin, they disconnected the wagons, then pushed the locomotive forward, without a driver or stoker, at full steam. At a bend the locomotive jumped off the rails going to plant itself through a parallel track. As a passenger train arrived from Dublin, the rebels required railway workers not to report the obstacle. The passenger train then collided in the dark against the diverted locomotive. Three of his cars were smashed, and eight travelers were seriously injured. The Feats of the Irish Rebels - A Night of Rebellion and Chaos
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a dramatic moment in the history of Ireland's fight for independence. In the darkness of night, a group of fearless Irish rebels took on a daring operation to disrupt the British-controlled railway system near Dublin. Led by their determination and armed with rifles, these brave men halted a freight train, disconnecting its wagons before pushing the locomotive forward at full steam. As fate would have it, at a treacherous bend in the tracks, the locomotive derailed and crashed into another parallel track. Unbeknownst to them, a passenger train was hurtling towards this unexpected obstacle. The rebels quickly coerced railway workers into silence as they watched helplessly while eight passengers were seriously injured in the ensuing collision. Illustrated by Achille Beltrame for Courier Sunday in January 1923, this color lithograph brings to life an intense battle scene that unfolded during Ireland's war of independence. It showcases not only the bravery but also highlights the dangerous risks taken by those fighting against oppression. The image serves as a reminder of how ordinary individuals can come together to challenge authority and fight for their freedom. It symbolizes both defiance and sacrifice as these rebels risked their lives to make their voices heard amidst conflict and chaos. Through this powerful artwork captured by Bridgeman Images from Fine Art Finder, we are transported back in time to witness one small yet significant act that contributed to Ireland's journey towards liberation.
