This print showcases Jacob Jordaens' masterpiece, "Prometheus Bound" which beautifully depicts a significant tale from Greek mythology. In this timeless artwork, Prometheus, one of the mighty Titans, is portrayed as a heroic figure who defied the gods for the benefit of mankind. The painting captures the pivotal moment when Prometheus stole fire from Hephaestus and bestowed it upon humanity. However, Zeus, the principal god in Greek mythology, was outraged by this act of rebellion and decided to punish Prometheus severely. Chained to Mount Caucasus by Zeus himself, Prometheus endured unimaginable suffering. During his eternal torment on the mountain, an eagle relentlessly pecked at his liver day after day. Astonishingly enough, Prometheus' liver regenerated overnight only to be subjected to further agony with each new dawn. Fortunately for Prometheus, his release eventually came through Hercules (also known as Heracles or Herakles), another legendary figure in Greek mythology. With great strength and determination, Hercules freed Prometheus from his chains and put an end to his excruciating punishment. Jacob Jordaens masterfully captured this gripping mythological scene using oil on canvas. His attention to detail brings forth both the pain endured by Prometheus and the power of divine retribution.
