EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts a pair of leopards, Panthera pardus, in their natural habitat, showcased in the Gardens of the Zoological Society. The image is taken from William Smellie's translation of Count Georges Buffon's seminal work, "History of the Earth and Animated Nature," published by Thomas Kelly in London in 1829. The leopards, the most widely distributed of all big cats, are depicted in their black melanistic form, also known as a panther or black leopard. Melanism is a rare genetic trait that results in the production of excess pigment, giving the animal a solid black coloration, making it more difficult for the leopard to blend in with its surroundings. The intricate detail of the engraving captures the power and grace of these magnificent animals, with their muscular bodies, sharp claws, and piercing eyes. The lush greenery of their habitat adds to the sense of the animals' natural beauty and provides a stark contrast to their dark forms. Buffon's "History of the Earth and Animated Nature" was a groundbreaking work in the field of natural history, covering a wide range of topics from geology to zoology. Smellie's translation brought Buffon's work to a wider audience, making it an essential resource for scholars and naturalists of the time. This beautiful engraving is a testament to the enduring fascination with the natural world and the importance of preserving and studying it for future generations. The leopards in the image serve as a reminder of the power and majesty of nature, and the need to protect these magnificent creatures and their habitats.
