EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts the Carroccio of Cremona, a medieval city symbol that holds significant historical importance for the Italian town of Cremona. The Carroccio is represented as a four-wheel wagon, adorned with the insignia and colours of the city. Drawn by a team of caparisoned cattle, the wagon is followed by a group of cavalrymen in full armour, ready for battle. The Carroccio was a symbol of civic pride and military power for the people of Cremona during the Middle Ages. It was believed that the city's fortunes were tied to the wagon, and that its safekeeping was crucial for the prosperity and protection of Cremona. The wagon was also believed to have supernatural powers, and was said to possess the ability to heal wounds and ward off illness. The engraving shows the Carroccio adorned with various symbols, including a Milanese crossbow, shield, helmet, banner, and a bell. These symbols represented the city's allegiance to the Duchy of Milan and its military might. The cavalrymen, dressed in armour and carrying shields and weapons, are ready to defend the Carroccio and the city it represents. This engraving is from Giulio Ferrario's "Il Costume Antico e Moderno," published in Florence in 1844. The work was a comprehensive study of historical fashion and costumes from around the world, and this image of the Carroccio of Cremona is a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of medieval Italy.
